Speaker Fabian Núñez stands up against handouts to CSU officialsSpeaker Fabian Núñez has been steadfast in his commitment to improving California’s education system and increasing opportunities for our young people to have access to higher education. Núñez is calling for a legislative audit of CSU pay deals involving Chancellor Charles Reed’s giving former high-level CSU officials over $4 million after they left the CSU system—and allegedly paying others “hundreds of thousands of dollars to do no discernible work while students have seen their tuition rise almost 30 percent in the past three years” (Núñez, as quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle). Many of us recognize that this is more evidence of the culture of corruption that permeates the CSU and ultimately hurts faculty and students. The President of the California Faculty Association, John Travis, notes that the “extra compensation handed out could have helped prevent $2.5 million in budget cuts planned for CSU Dominguez Hills, the campus that serves the most African American students in the system.” Travis went on to say that Californians “deserve better and an investigation is in order to protect taxpayers and the mission of the CSU system.” Call or write Speaker Núñez to thank him for his courageous call for an audit of CSU pay deals. Find out what you can do to help.
